PARANHOS WATER AND THE CANALLEM MAIORUM
The water of Paranhos is mentioned in a Royal Charter issued by Queen Teresa in 1120 and in a Royal Charter issued by King Afonso Henriques in 1138. These charters also mention the “Canallem Maiorum,” the largest canal, which is currently known as the Rio de Vila, as it was named during the reign of Afonso IV, and the city's other river, the Rio Frio. -

MANANCIAL DAS VIRTUDES (SOURCE OF VIRTUES)
The water from this spring began to be exploited in 1619 for use in various mines, and a fountain was built for this purpose that same year. That year, the Fonte do Rio Frio (Cold River Fountain), known as Fonte das Virtudes (Fountain of Virtues), was built. It was believed that the waters had medicinal properties that could cure diseases.
