THROUGH THE HISTORY OF WATER
A tour that reveals not only the history of the city's water supply, but also the city's relationship with water, in a diachronic approach, from the 15th to the 19th century.
In the early days, the city of Porto was supplied with water from natural springs that form underground and are abundant in the city. Later, fountains were built in public spaces, many supplied by their own springs, while others received water through underground aqueducts that originated from a distant spring or a cistern built to store water. The most emblematic is the Arca d'Água, due to its size and the quality of the water from its three springs, which supplied the city from Paranhos to Arca de Sá de Noronha. Later, the aesthetic function was combined with the water supply function, and public fountains with more complex artistic and iconographic designs and on a more prominent scale appeared in the city. The relationship with the Douro River took on another dimension and became navigable and used as a means of trade. The medieval and customs city grew with trade and modernized based on modernist movements. With the hygienist movement of the 19th century, it received its first industrial water supply system.
