CLASSIFIED FONTS

A route that explores Porto's water structures that are recognized as heritage sites to be protected for their historical and artistic value.

The first water structures in the city of Porto to be classified were the Passeio Alegre and Virtudes fountains, classified as National Monuments by decree-law of June 16, 1910, in accordance with the guidelines set out in the decree-law of December 30, 1901. This was followed by the fountain of the Angel São Miguel, classified as a Property of Public Interest by decree-law of February 19, 1926, and according to the decree-law of March 22, 1938, the fountains of Colher, Jardim de São Lázaro, Rua Escura, Rua de São Domingos, Rua de São João (remains), Rua das Taipas, and the fountains of Quinta da Prelada, based on the criteria of the decree-law of March 7, 1932, defined for the classification of Properties of Public Interest – “(...) artistic, historical, archaeological, or numismatic value worthy of inventory.” (Article 2 of Chapter I). Later, the Oliveiras Fountain was classified as a Property of Municipal Interest in 1993, together with its annex building, and the Foz do Sousa Water Collection Center was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 2010.
