It stood between the staircases opposite the Mercado Ferreira Borges, built in 1888 to replace the old Mercado da Ribeira. It was supplied by water from the Arca de Água do Mercado do Anjo. Made of cast iron, it was produced in Paris at the iconic Val d'Osne foundry, fitting into the artistic context of the 19th century, known as fonte d'art.
