It belonged to the cloister of the primitive convent, founded in 1518 by D. Manuel I. Although its authorship is not known, studies point to the master bricklayer João Lopes, hired to direct the stone works of the architectural complex. His work includes the Fountain of São Domingos do Porto (1544), the Fountain of the Praça da Rainha in Viana do Castelo (1554), the Fountain of the Praça Municipal de Caminha (1551) and the Fountain of the Plaza de la Herrería de Pontevedra ( 1549). With the extinction of religious orders in 1834, the convent was demolished, making way for the São Bento Railway Station.
