- It was built to take advantage of the water from the spring that was discovered during construction work on the river pier by Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro, producer of Port Wine, known as Real Companhia Velha. The Company was responsible for building the docks that go from Ribeira to Foz to facilitate the transport of wine. It was located next to Monte da Arrábida, in the quarry where the spring flowed, at the edge of the parishes of Massarelos and Lordelo do Ouro.
